The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is a secure seed bank located on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen near the town of Longyearbyen in the Svalbard archipelago about 1300 km from the North Pole. This underground vault houses and maintains a wide variety of seeds and duplicate samples. This in order to keep these plants all food crops in the world and thus to preserve genetic diversity in case of extinction of a plant in the world.
